Disarming the Reflex
Where we are on the timeline
After The Architecture of the Invisible, Part VI turns from diagnosis to practice. The question is no longer how bread became automatic, but how a reader can handle bread without contempt or panic.
This chapter is not individualized medical care.
The practical claim is modest: readers can distinguish kinds of bread, occasions, bodies, and communities before making rules. The theological claim is protective: disarming the reflex is not despising prayer, Eucharist, or hospitality. The medical claim is cautious: people with diabetes, celiac disease, eating disorders, pregnancy, childhood needs, allergies, or other conditions need qualified care.
