Five Kinds Of Bread

Disarming begins with categories.

KindQuestion
Liturgical breadWhat does this sign require inside a tradition?
Feast breadWhat does this occasion celebrate?
Household breadWhat memory or care does this carry?
Industrial stapleHas this become the default base of the diet?
Medical exceptionWhat does this body need or need to avoid?

These categories keep the book from saying “bread” too quickly.

The Eucharistic host is not a sleeve of sandwich bread. A grandmother’s holiday loaf is not a vending-machine pastry. A celiac diagnosis is not a low-carb preference.

Latter-day Saint practice adds another distinction. Doctrine and Covenants 89, the Word of Wisdom, names grain as ordained for human and animal use and singles out wheat for human beings.1 Popular Latter-day Saint interpretation usually treats the Word of Wisdom less as a sacramental bread rule and more as a health commandment that commends grains, fruits, herbs, restraint with meat, and abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea.2

That matters for this book because it gives wheat a modern religious endorsement outside the older Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant eucharistic arguments. It should still be read carefully: D&C 89 is not a twentieth-century refined-flour nutrition trial, and common Latter-day Saint observance has often emphasized prohibited substances more visibly than the grain and meat counsels.

Once those distinctions are named, the reader has room to breathe.

The aim is not to purify life of bread. It is to stop letting one sacred word protect every product and every habit that borrows its glow.
