Bread Of The Presence

The tabernacle has a table.

Exodus commands that the bread of the Presence be placed before God regularly. 1

Leviticus gives the fuller rule: twelve loaves, set out each Sabbath, eaten by Aaron and his sons in a holy place. 2

Bread here is not just provision. It is arranged presence.

The phrase is often called showbread in older English. More literally, it is bread of the face or presence. The loaves stand before God as part of Israel’s holy furniture.

This is a deep root of bread’s religious authority. Bread can be table, sign, portion, priestly food, and continual offering.

The later Christian reader may hear Eucharistic echoes. Those echoes are historically important, but they are not the first meaning.

The first task is to let Israel’s cultic bread be Israel’s cultic bread.
